About me
Post Falls, Idaho has been my home since 2012.I live near a 500 acre wood. At the end of most work days you'll find me running through it, listening to audiobooks and following the changing seasons. When I'm not working I love to write, read, and tinker. I'm a fiction author, startup founder, blogger, serial podcaster, and a constant learner.
What I bring
I'm 37 years old, and have had about as many twists and turns in my career. With a background in product design, graphic design, frontend development, illustration, and writing, I would be honored to join your team and keep learning alongside other amazing folks.Cal Newport has been the single greatest inspiration in how I've shaped my career. Each year I grow and learn while adding to the skills I already have.
Why this position
I'm worked on teams where designers sit in ivory towers doling out Figma components and prototypes to engineers.I'm done with that. It's wasteful and leads to siloed teams.I want to build great products while learning from customers with in-production code.Enough of navel gazing designers annotating designs and getting engineers fired for not matching Figma pixel by pixel.I've seen the light. The only way around this chaos is through. Designers need to code their designs. The shape up book has inspired how I create, and I'd love to work on a team where it's embedded in the DNA of shipping.I want to keep pushing my craft, but without moving into management again.Over the last few years I've been getting back into code. And I'd like to work at a place where I no longer feel confined to being a Figma aficionado.
Why design
Because it's how I make sense of the world.I've tried other careers but this one keeps my interest. My work helps solve problems, requires constant learning, and the taste gap is real.I've got a lifetime ahead of me where I can continue to learn, ship amazing products, and have fun while doing it.
Why the web
I've spent years helping build great sites and products in the WordPress space. One of my latest endeavors is helping WordPress products improve onboarding. We need the web.Large closed systems have their place, but so do open solutions. I've spent years working in WordPress, including co-leading the 4.9.8 release.Products built on Ruby on Rails, WordPress, and other web technologies help give a leg up against closed systems.A thriving open web allows people to create, companies to thrive, and ideas to spread.
Work I love
As a designer I'm constantly looking at inspiration from other great products.Mobbin is my favorite tool for finding real things that shipped.Every day I explore dozens of ideas and pull pieces into the designs I ship. With that said, some of my favorite things being created today: !Boring, Panic, Things 3,
